How much data does the Skype for Business app use when making a call?

Deakin Staff who have been transitioned to Skype for Business Voice can make and receive phone calls using the Skype for Business app on their mobile devices if they choose.

 

Skype for Business app data usage

Calls using the Skype for Business app on your mobile use data and may result in charges to your data plan if you use mobile data rather than free wi-fi. The following guide provides some indicative data usage figures to help you decide whether using the Skype for Business app for calling is the right choice on your data plan.

Note: The data usage figures provided below are indicative estimates only based on limited tests conducted at Deakin*. Accurate data usage estimates cannot be provided as usage will vary significantly depending on individual calling conditions. Individual monitoring of actual data usage is recommended to avoid exceeding mobile plan limits.

Tips for managing data usage

  • Deakin staff are not required to download to or use the Skype for Business app on their personal mobile devices. The use of personal mobiles for work use by Deakin staff is optional and at the discretion of the staff member.
  • You are responsible for monitoring the data usage on your phone to meet plan usage limits. Data usage that exceeds your plan limits may result in very high excess data charges and bill-shock.
  • Know your data plan limits - download a data usage tracking app (from your app store) and regularly monitor your data usage to ensure you meet your plan data usage limits
  • Switch off mobile data in the Skype for Business app settings and stick to wi-fi to prevent charges to your data plan.
  • If using mobile data to make calls using the Skype for Business app, limit calling to urgent calls, avoid video calling, keep calling time to a minimum and monitor data usage.
  • Switch off mobile data and data roaming in your phone settings when not using it to avoid background (hidden) use of your data plan.

* Tests were conducted using the Skype for Business app on iPhone 5S using the eduroam wi-fi, Telstra 3G and Telstra 4G networks. Wi-fi and cellular data usage was tracked and measured using the Data Usage app for iPhone. Figures have been averaged and rounded – they provide an indicative estimate of usage only. Data usage will vary under individual calling conditions. Figures should be used as a guide only - monitoring of actual data usage is recommended.
